Τα βακτηρίδια δρούν σαν βασικοί αποικοδομητές των άχρηστων προιόντων των ψαριών και των φυτών μας, αποικοδομούν υπολείμματα τροφής, συμμετέχουν στους κύκλους διαφόρων στοιχείων που είναι πολύτιμοι για την ισορροπία του ενυδρείου μας, όπως κύκλος αζώτου, κύκλος άνθρακα, κύκλος φωσφόρου κ.α, δρουν φωτοσυνθετικά, προκαλώντας κάθε φορά ισορροπία ή ανισορροπία στην ανάπτυξη των φυτών του ενυδρείου και τέλος εποικούν κάθε επιφάνεια που υπάρχει διαθέσιμη εντός του ενυδρείου.
Σε ένα καινούργιο ενυδρείο ο αποικισμός του περιβάλλοντος απο τα βακτήρια είναι μια αργή διαδικασία, έτσι συνιστάται να μην εισαχθούν ψάρια και άλλοι οργανισμοί νωρίτερα των τριών εβδομάδων, ούτως ώστε να εδραιωθεί η ισορροπία και η εγκατάστασή τους.
